mastering social media copywriting

July 17, 2025

Yes, on top of graphic design, video editing, and 102038276 other things, social media managers must master the art of copywriting.

how to master social media copywriting

When you think of copy, it’s usually bold, punchy lines in a magazine(Got Milk?), but copy is also extremely important in regards to your social media presence. Captions, Facebook and X status updates, and LinkedIn posts all have become a place to create your own copy. And it’s not just about SEO, it’s an art- who are you? What vibe do you exude? Let’s get into it!

tap into your tone

You have a unique voice and that’s what gives life to your brand. Your tone is what makes you stand out from the crowd and connect to your followers. Take the time to decide what you want your audience to feel when they read your words or think of your brand. For example, you may sell jewelry aimed towards beach goers- what kind of emotions do you want to evoke? Personally, I’d aim for unbothered and fun- these are the vibes I envision having at the beach, but that’s the beauty of copy. You may think of something else entirely and that’s the goal!

just do it

Sometimes we sit and try to think about the perfect thing to say, but the best work comes from steady progress. It’s best to write all your thoughts down. Flesh out your main and supporting points and from there edit with your brand’s style. Step away and then re-read your work with fresh eyes. If you need inspiration, check out your competition, but make sure you add your own spin to it. You’re not a copy! You’re one-of-a-kind and your copy should reflect that.

make it stand out

Everything you write should be important to your audience. You can brainstorm and pick your favorite topic or you can choose what you would want to read. However you choose to go about this, make sure your topic resonates with you as well! Making an impact can vary from the words you choose (simple is best, but we have a lot of choices here- i.e. different age groups use specific vocabulary!) to the format of your writing . You can utilize references, memes, and more! What inspires, challenges, fascinates, excites you right now? Find subtle ways to bring this into your copy and you’ll be unstoppable.

it's easier than it sounds (promise)

All in all, being intentional is what it’s all about. Next time you post, ask yourself: what am I trying to convey with this post? Write it down. Skip a line and rewrite your copy with your brand’s tone (educational, fun, humorous. The sky’s the limit!). Finally, take a break or do something else. Come back with fresh eyes and try another rewrite! How does it sound? Remember you’re not going for perfection (it’s not attainable, bestie!)- you’re aiming for “YES! This feels right!” Now post that content and keep it pushing. We only get better from here.
